Crossrail set to only compensate £50 for land rights, London, UK

Friday, July 22, 2005

The British Parliament approved the first stage of the new Crossrail underground railroad through London as a £15 billion construction project earlier this month. Crossrail is the first major new train line to be built in London in decades.

The rail line being implemented as a hybrid bill in Parliament. After a second reading in Parliament, it was voted upon and decided that the government will commit to the project so that the line will be built.

The next issue before Parliament of to ensure that the implementation of the bill so it is consistent with private interests of neighborhoods to be affected by Crossrail. This is when residents can petition Parliament to change the way the line is constructed.

As a result of construction of the Crossrail line, hundreds of homes will have new tunnels excavated beneath them.

On contacting Crossrail, they have indicated approximately £50 will be offered to each landowner to buy all the land rights-of-way to build the train tunnel more than 9 meters below the residential buildings. The average value for properties in the affected areas is £350,000.

Under UK compulsory purchase laws to be used in this bill, the residents are entitled to the difference in the value of the whole property with and without a tunnel under it. If the offer given by Crossrail is not accepted by any of the residents, the residents can take the case to the Land Tribunal, where the fair value will be established.

This however, could be cost prohibitive. Crossrail does not indicate that it will attempt to assign a fair value in the original offer and instead is only going to offer around £50 per property in the hope that not many people take the matter to the Land Tribunal.

Suicide bomber kills twelve in northwest Pakistan

Saturday, March 6, 2010

At least twelve civilians have died and over 25 wounded in a suicide bombing in the Hangu District of north-west Pakistan, Thursday night. A convoy of 140 vehicles running from Tall, in Hangu District to the town of Parachinar in Kurram Agency, FATA was targeted.

The victims, some of them women, were at a petrol station in Hangu. The wounded were taken to adjoining hospitals.

According to police, the attacker detonated a bomb near a fully loaded bus. The convoy carried several people, vehicles filled with provisions and commodities for trading. A majority of the people in the group were Shia Muslims.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Several insurgents have attacked the country’s North West Frontier Province in the last year. Earlier, three died in another suicide attack on a police station in Karak, located in the same area.

Many Shi’as dwell in the Parachinar and Orakzai area which has been home to violence in the past. The Tall-Parachinar road was closed to the public in 2008 and 2009 due to Taliban activity. The latter targeted Shia Muslims, sources say. The road was re-opened about two months ago, with convoys guarded by security forces forming the bulk of the traffic.

Hangu borders Pakistan’s tribal regions, where several militant groups are believed to be operating. However, security forces say that arrangements have improved from the past.

Using Forex Trading Signals To Increase Your Trading Profit

Submitted by: Roger Overanout

Forex trading can be a volatile form of investing. Many people have lost a significant amount of money buying and selling foreign currencies. While hoping to time their trades perfectly to take advantage of market dynamics and trends, most Forex traders begin by losing money before they start making any profit. Fortunately, there is a way to stack the Forex deck in your favour. Here we will discuss using Forex trading signals and whether doing so can help make your Forex trading more profitable.

What Are Forex Trading Signals?

Trading currencies effectively requires that you know when to buy and sell. However, unlike stocks which are largely based on the financial reports of a company, currencies are usually impacted by many other factors. Professional traders watch a variety of indicators to determine when they should buy or sell. In addition, they watch the trends that may affect the currencies they trade. These indicators and trends comprise the majority of Forex trading signals that experienced traders use.

Where Can You Get Forex Trading Signals?

The small currency trader rarely has access to the trading systems and software programs available to full-time researchers and traders. Also, most small Forex traders are unable to spend more than a few hours a day researching the currency markets (professionals often spend up to 16-hours per day looking at data and placing educated trades). This puts the small trader at a distinct disadvantage.

However there are some solutions, many currency brokers offer to supply small Forex traders with the Forex trading signals that their investment firm compiles but remember this type of service is only as good as the firm that is producing the signals. Access to these signals usually requires a subscription. If you’re currently looking for a Forex broker to work with, consider asking whether they can offer Forex trading signals for a fee.

Should You Rely On Forex Trading Signals provided by Forex Brokers?

There are two schools of thought here. Some traders wonder why Forex brokers offer these signals to the casual Forex trader. After all, if the signals truly do identify trends that can be leveraged for profit in the Forex market, why offer those signals to other traders? In a volatile market where knowledge is power, the distribution of valuable information would limit the potential of early movers (in this case, those offering the Forex trading signals).

On the other hand, other traders realize that their time and resources are severely limited. Many have full-time jobs and cannot devote 16 hours a day to studying the trends and other signals in the currency markets. Similarly, they don’t have access to the powerful software programs that major investment firms use to extract and compile data about those markets. So, they see value in a subscription services for Forex trading signals.

An alternative is to have your own software that generates Forex trading signals to help you enter and exit the market at the best time to maximise you trading profit. This type of software used to be too expensive for most traders but now there are several very good reasonably packages available on the internet.

In the end, Forex trading is volatile. In order to do well with Forex, you need timely information about the currency markets in which you trade. Understanding what kind of information you need and whether you have access to a timely source can mean the difference between profits and loss in your trading account.

Dubai World to receive $9.5 billion in government aid

Thursday, March 25, 2010

The government of Dubai announced that it intends to provide $9.5 billion to Dubai World to allow the government-owned investment company to restructure its debt.

The announcement comes as part of Dubai World’s plan to restructure more than $23 billion of debt, including converting nearly $9 billion of debt into equity, after its collapse last fall. The package includes $8 billion of funding to Nakheel, Dubai World’s real estate subsidiary, as well as $1.5 billion to Dubai World as a whole. The restructuring plan also seeks to, within eight years, repay all of Dubai World’s creditors.

According to the government of Dubai, $5.7 billion of the aid was from a former $10 billion loan to Dubai World, with the remainder being internally funded. The plan would transfer ownership of Nakheel, formerly a subsidiary of Dubai World, to the direct control of the Dubai government.

Response to the deal was largely positive, with one analyst saying the move “boosts sentiment because this is a strong commitment.” Christopher Davidson, author of books on Dubai and Abu Dhabi, said that while the new funding would “keep the wolves outside the gates a little longer,” the government could not be the sole funder of Dubai World and Nakheel.

Police stop LGBT march in Istanbul for third consecutive year

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

On Sunday, police stopped Istanbul Pride, a yearly LGBT march in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul. Police officials reportedly used rubber and plastic bullets and sprayed tear gas to prevent the participants from parading, after the Istanbul Governor’s office ordered them on Saturday not to conduct the march, asserting security reasons. This marks the third consecutive year activists were banned from holding the rally.

The statement released by the governor’s office read, “no application that suits the methods was made to our governor’s office”, though the organisers of the march disagreed. Homosexuality has been legal in Turkey for almost a century, but the governor’s office reported “serious reactions against the march.” Activists found checkpoints and a large number of police near Istiklal Avenue.

The pride organisers reported 41 were arrested by the police. Far-right Alperen Hearths was amongst nationalist groups calling for prohibiting the parade. Last week, on June 19, Kür?at Mican of Alperen said, “We will not allow them to walk. Wherever they march, we’ll also go. We will close down that street and they will not be able to go there. If we want, our numbers can reach 200,000”.

In a statement by the organisers of the rally, on Sunday, they said, “Our security will be provided by recognising us in the constitution, by securing justice, by equality and freedom”. Turkish legislators have yet to enact laws shielding the LGBT community from hate speech and ensuring civil rights. In 2010, Selma Aliye Kavaf, then-Minister of Women and Family Affairs said, “I believe homosexuality is a biological disorder and this disease needs treatment.” ((tr))Turkish language: ?Ben e?cinselli?in biyolojik bir bozukluk, bir hastal?k oldu?una inan?yorum. Tedavi edilmesi gereken bir ?ey bence. After the unsuccessful attempt to conduct the parade, organisers released a statement on Sunday, saying, “We are not scared, we are here, we will not change[…] You are scared, you will change and you will get used to it.”

Istanbul Pride was first organised in 2003, attracting by varying reports from tens of thousands to possibly a hundred thousand people in 2014. That was the last actual march before it was blocked three times in the last three years. Last year, the organisers were not granted permission for Istanbul Pride after Istanbul faced militant attacks. The 2015 march was stopped as it was about to start, and police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversees hypersonic missile test

Friday, January 14, 2022

On January 12, North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported a Tuesday hypersonic missile launch attended by leader Kim Jong-un and high-ranking politicians Jo Yong Won and Kim Yo-jong. This was the third missile North Korea (DPRK) launched this year. It flew for 1,000 kilometers (621 mi) before hitting sea, state media claimed.

“The Juche weapon representing the power of the DPRK” and of “superior maneuverability” was test-fired for “final verification of overall technical specifications”, according to state media. In an email sent to Al Jazeera, professor Leif-Eric Easley at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea said “[the] so-called hypersonic weapon is not technologically ready”. South Korean military authorities at first downplayed the missile, but later said it showed “improvement”, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

Earlier this year, North Korea conducted two missile tests: one last Wednesday, and a second one on Monday, which were confirmed by both South Korea and the Japanese coast guard. The first launch was a winter resilience test, state media claimed. North Korea tested their first hypersonic missile, Hwasong-8, on September 28. Ankit Panda, a defence expert from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said last Wednesday’s missile was not a Hwasong-8, but a new model unveiled at an October weapons exhibition in Pyongyang, North Korea. After the September test, Panda called Hwasong-8 a “significant milestone” in comments to the BBC.

On Monday, the United Nations (UN) missions of Albania, France, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States jointly called for dialogue and denounced the first test. The US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called it “a significant threat to regional stability”. On Tuesday, South Korean president Moon Jae-in said the tests worry him ahead of the country’s coming presidential election scheduled for March.

Hypersonic missiles are faster and can evade radar detection longer than regular ballistic missiles, the BBC explained.
