Ex-minister says UK Cabinet was “misled” about legality of Iraq war

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Clare Short, the United Kingdom’s then-Secretary of State for International Development, appeared before the Iraq Inquiry yesterday, and told the panel that the Cabinet was “misled” about the Iraq War’s legality prior to the 2003 invasion. The three-hour session was held in the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London‘s City of Westminster.

Short, an outspoken critic of the war, retired from the cabinet to become an independent MP two months before the invasion. She claimed to have been “conned” into staying on despite her doubts about the war and told the inquiry that the Cabinet, of which she was a part, was not a “decision-making body”, and that Parliament was simply a “rubber stamp”.

She also claimed that Tony Blair “and his mates” had acted “on a wing and a prayer”, having “leaned on” then-Attorney General for England and Wales Lord Peter Goldsmith, pressurising him to change his mind about the invasion. She did, however, admit that she had no evidence to support these claims. Goldsmith gave a verdict that the war would be legal only shortly before the invasion, having firmly held the belief that it would not be without a further United Nations Security Council resolution.

Short was applauded as she concluded her testimony, in which she said that she was “shocked” at how a definitive statement about the legality of the war circulated only as late as March 17, 2003 — just three days before the invasion began — that this state of shock led her to be “jeered at” by other ministers. Said statement, according to Short, contained no hint that Goldsmith had previously had any doubts whatsoever.

She said any discussion of legality was stopped at the same pre-war cabinet meeting. She accused Blair of standing in the way of such discussion, and said, “Everything that’s happened since makes me know that there was deliberate blockage and there were also all sorts of secret, private meetings”, and that normal cabinet communications were “closed down” as the invasion approached. “There was never a meeting that said ‘what’s the problem, what are we trying to achieve, what are our military, diplomatic options?’ We never had that coherent discussion … never.”

I think [Goldsmith] misled the cabinet. He certainly misled me, but people let it through

Goldsmith responded to her inquiries about the lateness of this statement by saying “it takes me a long time to make my mind up”, and that he had made his decision after consulting foreign legal professionals. She said that Goldsmith’s “doubts and his changes of opinion” made her “think for the attorney general to come and say there’s unequivocal legal authority to go war was misleading.” She said that “I think he misled the cabinet. He certainly misled me, but people let it through”.

[I]f we got a Palestinian state and a UN lead on reconstruction, that will be much better

She claimed that the government, having failed to secure a required UN resolution, started the “untrue” rumour that France had vetoed it. She said that she “believed them at the time. You don’t want to disbelieve your Prime Minister in the run-up to war and you want to believe the leader of your party. You want to be loyal”.

When asked why she had not resigned earlier than she did, she said that she “was conned” by Blair’s promises of a strong role for the UN in the reconstruction of Iraq, as well as more attempts to resolve the conflict about Israel. She said that she “thought that if we got a Palestinian state and a UN lead on reconstruction, that will be much better … I took a lot of flak for it. I still think, if we had done those things, it would have been a heck of a lot better.” She says that this lack of UN involvement in the post-invasion reconstruction effort was her main reason for retiring from the government.

Short said that she “was seeing the intelligence” about Iraq at the earlier stages of preparation for an invasion, but that in late 2002 “asked for a briefing… This just didn’t come and didn’t come… it became clear there was some sort of block on communications.” Apparently, the intelligence reports she say said that “Saddam Hussein didn’t have nuclear [weapons] … [he] would if he could but he was nowhere near it. It wasn’t saying there was some new imminent threat”.

Short asserted Blair’s evidence, given to the inquiry on Friday, was “historically inaccurate”, since “[t]here was no evidence of any kind of an escalation of threats” after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre. This is contrary to Blair’s claims that attitudes towards the threat Iraq posed “changed dramatically” after the attacks, and that Saddam Hussein “threatened not just the region but the world”.

We could have gone more slowly and carefully and not have had a totally destabilised and angry Iraq

She said, “We could have gone more slowly and carefully and not have had a totally destabilised and angry Iraq. The American people were misled to suggest that al-Qaeda had links to Saddam Hussein. Everybody knows that is untrue – that he had absolutely no links, no sympathy, al-Qaeda were nowhere near Iraq until after the invasion and the disorder that came from that.” Short criticised the military for not meeting the obligations laid out for them, as an occupying force, by the Geneva Convention.

Lord Boyce, the former head of the British armed forces, said in an earlier hearing that officials from the Department for International Development — Short’s department — let their opposition to the war prevent them from cooperating fully with the rest of the government immediately after the invasion. Alistair Campbell, Blair’s former spokesman, said that Short had been “difficult to handle” in the run-up to the invasion, and that there was fear that she may leak pieces of information that she did not agree with. Lord Andrew Turnbull, former Secretary of the Cabinet, however, said that these concerns were unfair, and that minority voices had been unfairly pushed to the sidelines.

Hilary Benn, who took over Short’s post after her resignation, is scheduled to give evidence before the inquiry today.

What Are The Best And Worst Aspects Of Modified Cars?

What Are The Best and Worst Aspects of Modified Cars?

by

Vincent A Rogers

When it comes to modifying cars, there s some pretty decent examples of how to do it right. Sadly though, there comes a time when it doesn t look so great, but not that this would put off any prospective car modifier. In homage then to the some of the best and worst modified cars, here at Cars4Sale we have established a list of some of the things we love and hate when it comes to suped up machines.

We see and sell on a variety of different cars, some modified monsters and some beauties we ll always find a home for them, but we ve so many we had to share our thoughts on what are the best and worst modified cars. So here it goes:

Best Aspects of Modified Cars

Fine Tuning

We love cars that have been fine tuned, with turbo engines, enhancing their engine size, capacity and ultimately speed. This is what modifying your car is all about and we doff our cap in appreciation for those that start off with their engine. Evo s that can beat the Ferrari s or Impreza s making mincemeat of Lamborghini s; fundamentally this is the whole point of modifying cars.

Vehicle Wrapping

This can make any modified car look the bee s knees. There s nothing better than seeing an awesome car with eye catching and sporty looking wrapping over it. Recently it s been used in various forms, such as company promotion, protecting paint work and to give an all round flashy look. You ll also see wrapping in motor sport as manufacturers will use it to advertise sponsors on their vehicles. It s a great way of trying out news colour schemes and designs without affecting the original paintwork of the car. So when it comes to selling your vehicle on, you can either keep it on, or have it removed to have you car restored to its original self.

Swapping Engines

As mentioned, modifying cars isn t just about the aesthetics. It s about getting your car fine tuned, so it performs to its best. That said, there are still really cool aesthetical modifications you can make, but it s important to concentrate on the engine first and foremost. The idea with swapping engines is fairly old, and even though it s considered sacrilege, you can enhance the power of your pride and joy tenfold.

Worst Aspects of Modified Cars

Cambers

Originating from Japan, the name comes from the way the wheels of the car incline sideways. This makes the car look like it s been squashed, with the wheels of the car pointing outwards. Not only does this not look right, but it doesn t exactly help the performance of your vehicle. In the worst case scenario you ll see cambers that make the car look like they ve folded up. Not a good look.

Big Wheels

There is a fascination when it comes to modifying cars, and that s to include big wheels. Whilst this may look good on large SUVs and even some Sedans, it looks terrible on smaller cars, especially if the arches are made bigger too. It makes the car look like it s on roller-skates, and you ll get no performance benefit out of it whatsoever; no extra speed, no more grip or better stopping. So if you re thinking of suping up your coupe, stop to think before you add 22s to it.

Interior Disasters

Okay, we ve all see Pimp My Ride, and some of the things they can produce is impressive. However, it s a television show people, and the people working on the cars are professionals. There s nothing worse than seeing an old clapped out banger, which has been given the star treatment, which contains luminous, bright and generally over the top colours, designs and accessories. Somewhere along the line, modifying cars went awry.

So there you have it, these were just some of the best and worst aspects of modifying cars. There are however many more. Whilst you may disagree, or agree, with our selection, that s the beauty of modifying cars, it s down to people s tastes and opinions.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Attorney Arthur J. Giacalone has filed a lawsuit in New York Supreme Court against the city of Buffalo‘s Common Council and Planning board, alleging that the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel was approved “without giving meaningful consideration to either the impact on the adjoining residential neighborhood, or the unique character of this section of Elmwood Avenue.” Giacalone is representing Nancy Pollina and Patricia Morris, who operate the Don Apparel (a vintage clothing and collectibles shop at 1119 Elmwood Avenue), Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a 72-room, seven-million-dollar hotel proposed by Savarino Construction Services Corporation and designed by architect Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group. Its construction would require the demolition of at least five buildings, currently at 1109-1121 Elmwood, which house several shops and residents. Although the properties are “under contract,” it is still not known whether Savarino Construction actually owns the buildings. It is believed that Hans Mobius, a resident of Clarence, New York and former Buffalo mayoral candidate, is still the owner. The hotel is expected to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court, is seeking annulment of the City of Buffalo’s rezoning and site plan approvals for the hotel.

“Had the Common Council members complied with State law and waited to receive comments from the County’s planning agency, they would have been obliged to address the County’s concerns regarding the replacement of former residential buildings with ‘a much larger commercial structure’, the health effects of placing a 55-vehicle parking area next to existing homes, and the absence of a traffic study to assess the likelihood that the project would add ‘considerable congestion’ to the Elmwood/Forest intersection,” said Giacalone.

“The four-story hotel will overshadow the neighboring homes and backyards, impacting quality of life and property values. Equally as important, the project will displace a unique and diverse group of businesses that have served nearby college students and Buffalo’s arts and theater community for many years, and replace them with upscale retail establishments that will cater, not to local residents, but to affluent tourists and business travelers,” added Giacalone.

On March 22, 2006 the city’s Common Council approved the rezoning for the proposed hotel and on March 28, the Planning board approved the design and site plan of the hotel.

The lawsuit, entitled Pollina et al. v. Common Council of the City of Buffalo et al., [Index No. I-2006-3885], has been assigned to the Honorable Rose H. Sconiers, and is scheduled for oral argument at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday June 8, 2006.

13 pilot whales returning to sea, off Western Australia

Monday, April 4, 2005

Rescuers were today sending a pod of 13 pilot whales back into the ocean at Geographe Bay, near to Busselton, south of Perth, in Western Australia. Six additional members of the pod had died during the stranding, including at least one calf. More than 300 people were watching as the whales set out to sea following a 30 hour rescue effort.

The whales had become stranded early yesterday. Several power boats and a spotter plane were escorting the surviving whales towards Cape Naturalist, in an operation expected to take several hours.

Western Australian State Government Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) officers feared that the whales could become stranded again.

One CALM officer, Neil Taylor, told ABC News dozens of his colleagues and community volunteers had helped the whales survive throughout the night.

“The vet has checked them all and given them some antibiotics yesterday, last thing before dark,” he had told the Australian national broadcaster.

“I think the plan is that the vet will be there again [today] and will give them some vitamins to kick them along before they actually take their swim out to sea.”

Most Psychic Readers Use Astrology To Help Assist Them With Their Gifts.}

This time in the calendar year everyoneinquires about upcoming associations, occupation and financial potentials for 2004. What in regards to the important planetary aspects and occasions taking area within the year? Bring benefit from the following to program your twelve months forward. Most psychic readers use astrology to help assist them with their gifts.

Through the period of time of May possibly 17-June 29, 2004 Venus enters Retrograde. Venus will be the planet of love, reflecting and revisingthe loving principal is essential. Affection is stagnant and inwardly expressed. This will not be a time to start dating or get married. If you might be spending for an high pricedmatchmaking or courting program, this would be an ideally suited time to freeze your membership. On the other hand, it can be an fantastic time to review and refresha existing partnership.

Due to the fact Venus policies money, logically revenue is earned by way of give good results. Throughout the Venus Retrograde of October by way ofNovember 2002,a building supervisor was hired to handle a developing in alternate for the cost-free condominium. This supervisor not only embarked on a brand new work, but also a new home. She detested the employment and hated her located problems. She quit prior to Venus turned immediate. In significantly less than six weeks, she moved twice. I wonder regarding the 3rd area she moved to promptly thereafter. It can be advised to place on carry any key actions, conclusions or embarking any new ventures on this retrograde.

From a give good results standpoint, HARDLY EVER EVER START A BRAND NEW POSITION WHATSOEVER WITH A VENUS RETROGRADE! The task will not be liked as well as a far better job generally turns into available after the retrograde. The amount of appreciation is unexpressed plus the job duties may not be liked. Worse, they may not have been stated directly from the beginning.

Since Venus principles elegance, plastic surgical procedure is just not recommended. Throughout the Venus Retrograde of January 1989 a consumer underwent Rhinoplasty (Nose Task). Though she did like her doctor, she didn’t just like the final results. She obtained her nose redone. Also, yet another client, a nurse, assisted inside operating room when a specific male singer underwent Rhinoplasty and 2 other procedures. This performer is notorious for getting an excessive amount of plastic surgical treatment for the level ofoverboard. Upon checking the day, it as well landed over a Venus retrograde. However, it undoubtedly justify why this particular person has and almost certainly will continually go under the knife multiple occasions. .

Venus’ pleasure principal is just not at its fullest. Interpersonal functions are comprehensive “busts” using a retrograde. By no means strategy a important social gathering because bothno one exhibits or even the celebration is boring! Worse, vacations are usually not advised. During Venus retrograde April 1912a cruise was not fulfilling. THE TITANIC SANK! Granted, there were difficult facets fromVenus retrograde to Neptune (the sea). But for those people that took a vacation, they didn’t fine enjoyment or get their money’s really worth. Interestingly, the videowas released a few weeks earlier than Venus went retrograde. The film was about a VenusRetrograde affair that made the film much more well-known using a Venus Retrograde throughout late December 1997 through early January 1998. At some position do not be shocked if it’s re-released.

With a constructive word, please don’t forget the above isto strengthen greater periods to assert actions. Absolutely nothing is a catastrophe. Help save your money and time. Tend not to make any main conclusions or commit time in seeking to tackle a major affair that you’ll be able to placed away from till the time is superior. Even so, do use this time period to evaluate your patterns in everyday life. It can be an excellent strategy to mature as someone. Expansion does bring about attainment!

Egypt protests: Army say they will not use force on demonstrators as Mubarak announces cabinet

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

The president of Egypt has suffered a “devastating blow” after the country’s army announced they would not use force against their own people, who continue to protest against the government tonight. The news came hours after six journalists who reported on the protests were released from custody.

Hosni Mubarak yesterday announced a new cabinet, which does not include several figures who protesters largely do not approve of. Analysts have, however, suggested little had changed within the government; many positions, they say, are filled with military figures.

To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people … have not and will not use force against the Egyptian people.

In a statement broadcast on state media in Egypt, the army said: “To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people … have not and will not use force against the Egyptian people.” A BBC correspondent in Cairo said the announcement meant it “now seems increasingly likely that the 30-year rule of Mr Mubarak is drawing to a close.”

“The presence of the army in the streets is for your sake and to ensure your safety and wellbeing. The armed forces will not resort to use of force against our great people,” the statement added. “Your armed forces, who are aware of the legitimacy of your demands and are keen to assume their responsibility in protecting the nation and the citizens, affirms that freedom of expression through peaceful means is guaranteed to everybody.”

Earlier today, six journalists from the independent news network Al-Jazeera were released from custody after being detained by police. The U.S. State Department criticized the arrests; equipment was reportedly confiscated from the journalists.

Egyptian officials yesterday ordered the satellite channel to stop broadcasting in the country. Al-Jazeera said they were “appalled” by the government’s decision to close its Egyptian offices, which they described as the “latest attack by the Egyptian regime to strike at its freedom to report independently on the unprecedented events in Egypt.”

In a statement, the news agency added: “Al-Jazeera sees this as an act designed to stifle and repress the freedom of reporting by the network and its journalists. In this time of deep turmoil and unrest in Egyptian society it is imperative that voices from all sides be heard; the closing of our bureau by the Egyptian government is aimed at censoring and silencing the voices of the Egyptian people.”

On Friday, Wikinews reported the government had shut off practically all Internet traffic both out of and into the nation, as well as disrupting cellphone usage. A spokesperson for the social networking website Facebook said “limiting Internet access for millions of people is a matter of concern for the global community.”

A reported 50,000 campaigners, who are demanding the long-time leader step down and complaining of poverty, corruption, and oppression, filled Tahrir Square in Cairo today, chanting “We will stay until the coward leaves.” It is thought 100 people have so far died in the demonstrations. Today there have been protests in Suez, Mansoura, Damanhour, and Alexandria.

Speaking to news media in the area, many protesters said the new cabinet did little to quell their anger. “We want a complete change of government, with a civilian authority,” one said. Another added: “This is not a new government. This is the same regime—this is the same bluff. [Mubarak] has been bluffing us for 30 years.”

In Tahrir Square today, protesters played music as strings of barbed wire and army tanks stood nearby. Demonstrators scaled light poles, hanging Egyptian flags and calling for an end to Mubarak’s rule. “One poster featured Mubarak’s face plastered with a Hitler mustache, a sign of the deep resentment toward the 82-year-old leader they blame for widespread poverty, inflation and official indifference and brutality during his 30 years in power,” one journalist in the square reported this evening.

US Department of Health proposes priorities for flu vaccine distribution

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Draft guidelines issued by the United States Department of Health and Human Services in November have established a series of tiers and categories for distribution of scarce vaccine in the event of pandemic flu. These guidelines give strong preference for emergency responders, military and national security personnel, and socially important occupations, such as top politicians, energy sector and communications personnel, bankers, and newborn infants. Distribution of vaccine to the elderly occupies a low priority, especially in the event of a severe pandemic with a case-fatality rate of 2% or more causing more than 1.8 million deaths. The scheme differs significantly from that proposed in Britain in 2005, which gave high priority to the elderly, noting that most of the deaths in recent years – ranging from 12,000 to 29,000 annually – were in elderly patients.

U.S. 2007 Britain 2005
Tier 1. Deployed/mission critical national security, health care providers, police, fire, vaccine manufacturers, top politicians Priority 1. Health care workers, nursing home staff
Tier 1*. Pregnant women, infants (*Sub-tier plan places at lower priority than other Tier 1) Priority 2. Fire, police, security, communications, utilities, undertakers, armed forces
Tier 2. Intelligence, border, national guard, other domestic national security, community support, electricity, natural gas, communications, water, critical government personnel, children, household contacts of infants Priority 3. High medical risk (e.g. diabetes, immunosuppressed)
Priority 4. All over 65 years of age
Tier 3. Other active duty military, important health care, transport, food, banking, pharmaceutical, chemical, oil sector personnel, postal and other government, children Priority 5. Selected industries, e.g. pharmaceuticals
Tier 4. High risk conditions, all over 65 years of age Priority 6. Children
Tier 5. General public Priority 7. General public

The plan is open to public comment under U.S. Federal Register guidelines until December 31.

Unsecured Consolidation Loans Pay Off Small Debts Smoothly

By Turk Malloy

However small they may be, debts should not be ignored. Efforts should be made towards reducing and eliminating debts in their initial stages. This is a wise way to remain free of debt worries in future. For this purpose all you are required to do is apply for unsecured consolidation loans. These unsecured consolidation loans are tailor made for helping tenants or non-homeowners and even homeowners in paying off smaller debts in a smooth manner.

Unsecured consolidation loans means the loan amount will be utilized in paying off debts. This in turn means that though debts have been cleared, still the borrower is yet to repay the debts which now are in the form of the amount borrowed under unsecured consolidation loan. The advantage of unsecured consolidation loans is that this has helped in clearing higher interest rate debts and also that now the borrower has to pay installments to just one lender instead of many.

You are not required to place collateral with the lender for unsecured consolidation loan making them a risk free affair for a debt ridden borrower like you. But you will be approved a smaller amount only for a shorter repayment duration of say 5 to 10 years. There is a higher interest rate attached with unsecured consolidation loans. But remember that you must avail a comparatively lower interest rate for paying off higher interest rate debts. So the loan is beneficial when the rate of interest has fallen for unsecured loans since the time you took previous loans. It would be wise to compare different lenders for interest rate and see which lender’s rate suits well for paying off debts. Also take note that the repayment duration should preferably be the maximum possible as this enables in spreading the loan in as many installments as suits the borrower and thus repaying the loan is seldom a burden.

For ensuring that you can repay unsecured consolidation loans, lenders would like to see documents of annual income and employment. These documents should be at hand with you when applying for the loan. Lender is dependent on your assurance about repaying the loan in time in making a loan deal with you. Since you have debts, you are a bad credit borrower as well and so you as bad credit automatically qualify for the unsecured consolidation loans.

After comparing various unsecured consolidation loans providers, apply to an online lender for fast processing and approval of the loan. the loan is of great help in getting rid of debt but do not let the loan become yet another debt. Your credit-score will get improve if the installments are paid regularly.
