Steve Wright, killer of five women in Suffolk, England, sentenced to life imprisonment

Friday, February 22, 2008

Steve Wright, yesterday convicted of the murder of five women in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, has today been sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court to life imprisonment. The bodies of the five women who worked as sex workers in Ipswich were found around the town in December 2006.

The judge, Mr Justice Gross said that a “substantial degree of pre-meditation and planning” was involved meaning the requirments for a whole life sentence for Wright was met. He said, “This was a targeted campaign of murder. It is right you should spend your whole life in prison.”

Speaking after the sentencing, Deputy Chief Constable of Suffolk Police, Jacqui Cheer said, “At the start of the inquiry we could not have asked for anything more. It is a tribute to all the people who have been involved – not only police officers but their support teams and all the members of the public who phoned-in offering information.”

Facebook to share the technology ‘behind its servers’

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Facebook announced Thursday it will begin to share some of the technology from their social network. The company indicated it would like to share specifications and design documents to help startups and to support innovation. Facebook hopes that they will be able to benefit from the innovations of others.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, announced the company’s “Open Compute Project” at an event held for reporters at the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

Facebook will not directly make any money from the new project. However, by making the designs of its servers open source, the company hopes others will find ways to improve them. They can then incorporate those advances into their own servers. Anything that can make Facebook’s servers run more efficiently provides a major benefit for the company.

More efficient servers will also drive down utility costs for the social media giant, which relies on massive data centers around the United States to keep its operations going.

Facebook says it is already working with manufacturers, including Dell, that are manufacturing servers based on its designs. Some new servers are already available.

Does Retirement Look Different Now?

Submitted by: Jennifer Wirt

The recession, which they say is ending, continues. Unemployment figures nationally are at 10.2% and are predicted to go to 11% next spring. Unemployment figures for people that have given up are higher, at almost 18%. I don t believe that the recession will be over until employers start hiring again.

What has happened to people who are retired or close to retirement? The recession impacted retirees as well. They have lost savings and are unable to earn decent returns on what is left. People in their 50s and early 60s wonder if their savings will be allowed to grow in the next several years or will there be another financial crisis that decimates their savings again. Many people have resigned themselves to working until they drop.

Recently, I saw a Frontline program that showed middle-aged people who had lost their jobs taking steps to find another one. Most of these people had been well-paid and in management positions. They were doing whatever it takes to find something. And, since employers have learned that they can function with many less employees than they had before, these folks often had to accept much less than they were making and less responsibility than before the recesssion. They were also needing to compete with much younger people for the same positions requiring a whole different strategy. They are learning new skills, getting in shape and doing what they can to appear vital and contributing to potential employers.

Isn t this focus on getting a job to solve their financial situation just a band-aid? Aren t these people handing their potential employers the control over their future? These employers, when faced with another downturn, will do what they have to to stay profitable. They have learned to operate lean and mean . You are expendable.

I am taking another approach–Financial Independence. I am doing what I can to establish multiple streams of income so that I don t have to depend on the whim of another employer.

Robert Kiyosaki in Rich Dad s Conspiracy of the Rich–The 8 new Rules of Money, says for Sophisticated Investors there are four different investment catergories: 1. Businesses- for passive income; 2. Income-producing Investment Real Estate; 3. Paper Assets: Stocks, Bonds, Savings, Insurance, etc.; 4. Commodities: gold, silver, oil, platinum etc.

My husband and I are building a business that will provide passive income. We have a 401K that supplies the third asset category. In the next couple of years we plan to diversify into Income-producing Real Estate and Commodities. I believe this is the path to Financial independence.

If you are wishing to take steps toward Financial Independence rather than relying on a job for your future, take a look at the business we have chosen. We are building an asset while helping people. We have patented products–there are no competitors–our products are unique and they work! We have a distributor-funded charitable organization that feeds over 42,000 hungry children and families worldwide. You deserve to learn about this company!

Give yourself a gift! Take control of your future. Start building financial independence. Where will you be in 5 years if you do nothing? Hoping and praying that they skip you in the next round of layoffs? Or building a future that will allow you to have the retirement of your dreams? It is your choice!

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Wikinews interviews Steve Burke, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Sunday, December 13, 2015

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.
