Study: Partisan political thought is predominantly unconscious and emotional

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

A recent study led by Dr. Drew Westen, a Professor of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia has concluded that political partisans use an “almost entirely emotional and unconscious” thought process when digesting damaging information about a favored political candidate.

The experiment used fMRI scans of 30 men who self-identified as either a committed Republican or Democrat. The subjects were given a series of conflicting quotes by either President Bush or Senator Kerry, and covered such topics as the Enron scandal and the current state of Social Security. The quotes were doctored to maximize the apparent contradiction, but were presented as factual.

The results suggests that many seemingly rational political decisions are strongly influenced by unconscious emotional reactions. Such conclusions match well results from advertising psychology which say that purchases are also not as rational as people believe. Past fMRI studies have found that Democrat and Republican partisans tend to experience different emotions when shown an image of a preferred candidate.

Westen will present his results next month at a meetings of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in Palm Springs, CA.

How You Can Contribute Being A Senior Citizen To The Society

By Sally Grey

The elderly members of our society are most often seen only on the fringes, as people who have ‘outlived their responsibilities’. Many times, it happens because the society itself does not visualize a specific role for the elderly people in the social fabric. Many aged people also start believing that they can no longer contribute meaningfully to their family or the society once they cross a particular age. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Senior citizens help pave the way for the younger generation. Their experience, maturity and wisdom can be invaluable in many situations. In fact, senior citizens should be actively encouraged to participate in the societal activities sharing their wisdom and experience with the younger generation.

As senior citizens, you can also take matters into your own hands. There are many elderly people who actively participate in social causes to keep themselves mentally agile and physically fit. Volunteering at your local church is good way to give back to the society. It helps you grow spiritually and keeps you busy post retirement. Foster grandparent programs are also offered by churches. Here, senior citizens mentor and tutor children from low-income and broken homes. There is nothing better than imparting education to the under-privileged. This contribution of yours to the society is invaluable at more than one level.

You can also actively volunteer for emergency services such as firefighting. For such activities, you may need a basic level of fitness. So try these out only if you feel fully confident about your ability with physical activities.

Using your experience and skills to help others, like neighbors, deal with everyday problems is another great way to put what you have learned throughout your life to good use. For instance, if you are a retired plumber, you can give some practical advice to a neighbor who wants to install a swimming pool. A former banker can offer investment advice to his/her friends or neighbors, while a former insurance agent can give tips on the right insurance products to buy. Alternately, you can work as a consultant or in a part-time capacity and use your experience, skills to assist organizations and other people. You can even earn some money while engaging in this type of consulting, which could be an additional benefit of doing some meaningful work.

Teaching underprivileged children is another wonderful way to make a positive contribution and stay mentally agile. Many elderly people who do this kind of voluntary teaching believe that being in the company of young children makes them feel young at heart once more.

Participation in social activities helps you regain a sense of purpose in your golden years, which is important to stay happy and satisfied in life. It also makes those around you understand just how valuable you still are. When you give back to the society, it holds you in high esteem, which is great for your confidence as well as self image. So go ahead, engage in activities that you enjoy most and make the most of your sunset years.

Doha round of trade talks suspended after negotiations fail

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

The director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, suspended negotiations in the Doha round of trade talks on Monday, after a meeting of six “core” negotiators India, Brazil, the United States, European Union, Japan, and Australia in Geneva failed to make any headway in reconciling differences over agricultural trade liberalisation. The US wanted cuts in import tariffs for farm products, which were rejected by EU, Japan and India, who asked for cuts in agricultural subsidies.

Peter Mandelson, the EU trade commissioner, told the Financial Times: “If the US continues to demand dollar-for-dollar compensation in market access [cutting tariffs] for reducing domestic support, no one in the developing world will ever buy that and the EU will not either.” Brazil also identified the US stand on subsidies as the reason the talks failed.

Susan Schwab, the US trade representative, said that the other countries sought exemptions from tariff cuts for a wide range of goods and that such exemptions would defeat the object of the talks – to expand trade. “As we went through the layers of loopholes . . . we discovered that a couple of our trading partners were more interested in loopholes than market access,” she said.

The Indian Commerce and Industries Minister, Kamal Nath said that developing countries could not allow their subsistence farmers to lose their livelihood and food security to provide market access to agricultural products from developed countries.

One dead in Michigan school shooting

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

At least one person is seriously wounded and one dead after a 17 year-old male opened fire and shot his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Forsyth, 17, four times outside the Herbert Henry Dow High School located in Midland, Michigan before turning the gun on himself. The shooter was pronounced dead on the scene and according to Midland Police Chief, James St. Louis, the shooter died in the parking lot of the school while the girl is in a local hospital. She is said to be in stable but serious condition at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.

Chief St. Louis says that the boy pulled out a gun and began to shoot the girl after the two had a conversation. He then shot himself. St. Louis also said that the mother of the girl, who had dropped her daughter off at school for the day, tried to stop the incident from happening by driving her car in between the girl and boy, but was not successful. The boy, whose name is not known, apparently had stored the gun inside his backpack.

According to Midland Deputy Chief, Bob Lane, the boy was not a student at the school and was not granted access into the school. Lane also stated that the boy then placed a phone call to Forsyth telling her to meet him outside the school just before 11:00 a.m. [EST].

The school hosts nearly 1,500 students. The school was in lockdown, but according to a statement on the school’s website, the lockdown was cancelled.

“This morning a shooting incident took place at Dow High outside the building near the cafeteria. A Code Red lock-down was issued, but has been lifted,” said the statement.

British soldier jailed for 10 years for spying for Iran

Friday, November 28, 2008

An Iranian-born British soldier has been jailed for ten years after being convicted of “communicating information useful to an enemy”. Forty-five year-old Daniel James from Brighton had been the personal translator for the head of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, General Sir David Richards.

After joining the Territorial Army, Britain’s army reserve, James was sent to Afghanistan in May 2006. He was arrested in December 2006, two months after he made contact with Colonel Mohammed Hossein Heydari, an Iranian military attaché in Kabul. The court heard allegations that James believed he had been denied promotion because of racism and jealousy, and also that he had debts of £25,000 and had mortgages on four properties in Brighton.

The jury at London’s Central Criminal Court was unable to agree on verdicts on two other charges under the Official Secrets Act, relating to his possession of sensitive documents on a USB memory stick, and a second of misconduct in a public office.

Make Breathing Fun Again With Playful Child &Amp; Pediatric Nebulizers

By Gary Gordon

Lung ailments do not discriminate for or against the young. Even children can suffer from asthma severe enough to warrant the use of child nebulizers. If you are a parent, you will want to find a product that is easy to use and one that will not frighten your child, and if you are a pediatrician you will need an effective child nebulizer to allow your patient to get the fullest benefit possible from the medications.

Nebulizers work by forcing air through a liquid medicine. This then is turned into a breathable vapor, which is inhaled through either a mouthpiece or a mask. Inhalation is the best method of taking these drugs since they target the lungs, and if taken in a pill form, they would have adverse effects on the body. A child nebulizer must be used according to the pediatrician’s instructions. If all of the medicine is not taken, the benefits of the drug are lessened or lost.

Most young patients are scared to use nebulizers for children. For the medication to work properly, though, it must be actively inhaled. This means that the parent cannot just blow the medicated vapors past a sleeping child. The patient himself must use either the mouthpiece or the mask that came with the child nebulizer. After taking the treatment, it is important that the parent rinses out the child’s mouth and the mouthpiece or mask. This helps to wash away any remnants of the drugs in the mouth and the bad aftertaste that can occur with many breathing treatments. Especially if the child nebulizer dispenses steroids, the mouth has to be washed since left over steroids can lead to thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth. If symptoms such as white patches or areas inside the mouth appear inflamed, contact your pediatrician. He can recommend the best treatment, but do not stop using the child nebulizer unless specifically instructed to do so. Thrush is common in most infants even if they at not using steroids and it often cause no pain for the child.

Many of child nebulizer customers are patient’s parents, or they are from clinics or small medical facilities. Often for these people, budgets are often extremely tight, but needs are very high.

A child with asthma or other breathing problems must have their drugs administered in the proper manner. There are several options for giving respiratory medications to children such as child nebulizers, metered dose inhalers (MDI), breath actuated inhalers, and dry powder inhalers (DPI). In many cases, the maintenance of their symptoms is accomplished through the use of daily administration of asthma drugs such as corticosteroids. Most children older than five can give themselves these drugs through one of the inhalers, but for the very young, or should a child not be able to properly use an inhaler, he will likely need a pediatric nebulizers to deliver the medication.

Child nebulizers turn the respiratory medicine into a mist, which the child then breaths for at least five to ten minutes. It might be difficult for parents to keep their child still for the entire length of treatment. This is why many nebulizers designed for children have some sort of interactive component to engage the child and keep his interest while he is doing the breathing treatment. Many models will have a pacifier attachment to soothe the infant, but if the nebulizer is being used by an older child who is unable to wield an inhaler, a pacifier is not an option. For these children, there are now child and pediatric nebulizers that come with a set of building blocks with the machine itself serving as the base for the interlocking blocks. This has a two fold benefit in that the child is engaged, and he will not simply take the blocks to the other side of the room since he must build on top of the block base on the nebulizer. As hard as it is to keep the child near the nebulizer, he must do so to receive the entire dose of his medicine on a daily basis.

Pediatric nebulizers are one of the most effective methods of giving very young children and infants their inhaled medications. Since the drug is turned into a mist, the amount of the drug required is higher than with an inhaler. This is to ensure that the child receives the full dosage to help treat and maintain his asthma symptoms. A child nebulizer should only be used if the child is too young for an inhaler. This is because of the higher concentration of the drug, and thus higher risk of side effects, as opposed to the inhaler. Nebulizers should never be shunned for this reason, though, since by taking asthma treatment drugs is the only way to control symptoms and potentially save the life of the child. The need for medication must always come first, no matter how it is administered.

Home of Stonehenge builders found

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Scientists have uncovered the largest Neolithic settlement in the United Kingdom at the Durrington Walls and believe that the village was inhabited by the people who built the Stonehenge monument.

Scientists say that the village was built around 2,600 B.C., roughly when Stonehenge was believed to have been constructed, and housed over 100 people.

Inside the areas which would have been the interior of houses at the time, scientists also found outlines of what they think were beds and cupboards or dressers. Pieces of pottery and “filthy” rubbish around the site. Animal bones, arrowheads, stone tools and other relics were also discovered.

“We’ve never seen such quantities of pottery and animal bone and flint. In what were houses, we have excavated the outlines on the floors of box beds and wooden dressers or cupboards,” said Sheffield University archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson.

So far, the dig has revealed at least 8 houses roughly 14-16 feet square, but scientists say that they think there may have been at least 25 altogether.

The site was likely to have been occupied only seasonally rather than year-round and evidence suggests that a lot of “partying” went on at the location.

“The animal bones are being thrown away half-eaten. It’s what we call a feasting assemblage. This is where they went to party – you could say it was the first free festival. The rubbish isn’t your average domestic debris. There’s a lack of craft-working equipment for cleaning animal hides and no evidence for crop-processing,” added Pearson.

The Durrington Walls are approximately 2 miles from the Stonehenge site.
