Are Your Chances of Success Higher in a Publicly Traded MLM Company?

by

Wayne Wu

Is it better to be a distributor for a publicly traded MLM company? Some people intuitively think so.

Some companies like to spin the fact that they are a public company in their favour, saying they are more open than private companies What’s the truth?

The truth is, being publicly traded does not mean anything if you don’t know how to assess a company. It’s not a selling point. Your prospects don’t really care.

In fact, what prospects care most about is who gave the presentation.

The bottomline is, if you want long term success, you first need to know how to choose a solid company to build with. Don’t get caught up in all the hyperbole, see it clearly for what it is.

Once you are able distinguish between a good and a bad network marketing company, choose one company and build with it for the long term.

Some people think that because a company is publicly traded, it can’t be a scam. After all, investors don’t buy into scams do they?

Well, YTB International (Your Travel Biz), a publicly traded MLM company, was sued in early August 2008 by the Californian Attorney General for operating as a “Gigantic Pyramid Scheme”. In 2009, the Illinois Attorney General moved to shut down the company completely. That nightmare is not over yet.

In 2007, the FTC shutdown BurnLounge, another publicly traded company, because it was an endless chain recruiting pyramid scheme. This to show, a company does not have to be legit to be publicly traded.

Now, a publicly traded company must report its earnings, along with other fundamental figures. And because of that, some people think that you can properly do your due diligence from the published figures.

A privately held company doesn’t have to release any figures at all. Therefore a privately held company can lie, but a publicly traded company can’t lie, can it?

I wouldn’t be so confident on that either. In late 2001, ENRON filed one of the worst corporate bankruptcies in history. The audit revealed accounting fraud on a massive scale. It turned out ENRON hid billions of dollars of debt behind accounting loopholes and “special purpose entities.”

Companies can hire clever accountants to make their numbers look good, to entice investors to give them more money.

Public companies inherently have more overhead than privately held companies. Public companies need to hire special accountants and attornies, they need to have a public relations department, they need to hire graphic designers to make glossy annual reports, they often employ high flying CEO’s who command multi-million dollar salaries.

All of these are extra expenses that a private company doesn’t have.

Not matter what, the companies’ only source of revenue still comes from the hard work of distributors in the field. To pay for all of their extra overhead, public companies typically need to have higher prices for their products, making it more difficult for the distributors to sell them.

Finally, a publicly traded MLM company looks out for its investors first. They must ensure that investors get their dividends. Otherwise, the investors will take their money elsewhere.

Companies often lose millions of dollars on poor decisions. When a publicly traded MLM company gets into financial trouble, it will always put the investors’ interests first.

A common thing for a public company to do when it gets into financial difficulty is to stop paying its distributors through a compensation plan, and go to direct sales where commissions are only paid on the retail sales of the company’s product.

Publicly traded companies will often tell you if they might one day go direct sales. They say it in their Policies and Procedures.

“[Company] reserves the right to terminate this agreement, and all associated agreements (including, without limitation, the marketing incentive programs), upon 30 days written notice, with or without cause.”

Body Electric, Heartbar in 2002, Excel Communications in 2004, XLER8 in 2010 are just a few examples of publicly traded MLM companies who decided to do away with their compensation plan and stop paying residual income to distributors when they got into trouble.

It’s the distributors who will have to find a new home, and work hard to build it all again. They will lose faith in the MLM industry.

It seems like I’m having a hard go on publicly traded MLM companies. There are many private companies that have done bad things too.

The point I want to make is, don’t just join a

publicly traded MLM company

just because someone said it’s a good idea. Learn to choose wisely. Can you imagine building a profitable home based business?

Porsche and Volkswagen automakers agree to merger

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Porsche and Volkswagen family owners agreed on Wednesday to merge the companies, creating one large “integrated car-manufacturing group”.

“In the final structure, 10 brands shall stand below an integrative leading company alongside each other, whereby the independence of all brands and explicitly also of Porsche shall be ensured,” said the Porsche Automobil Holding SE company.

A task force has been set into place to discuss details of the merger over the next month. This task force embraces managers and representatives from the works council of both companies as well as the state of Lower Saxony.

Porsche based in Stuttgart, Germany was previously controlled by the Porsche and Piëch families voting stock.

Porsche had previously tried to raise its 51% shares in Volkswagen to 75% in a take-over bid. A special German law grants Lower Saxony enough power to veto decisions with its 20% share in the VW company.

“I’m certain that we can and will advance our partnership in the difficult current year 2009, [and] have the stuff to develop the powerhouse of the international automobile industry” said Martin Winterkorn chairman of the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG) and Scania AB.

The merger would help Porsche with its €9 billion debt which it incurred partially due to the ailing economy as well as its attempt at a takeover bid.

7 Great Ideas To Transform Your Old, Tired Floors!

How many times have you wished that your flooring was shinier, a different color, or just generally different? Today’s flooring products come in such a wide variety of styles, colors and price ranges that a little bit of work could turn up just what you have been thinking of. Read on for seven ways that you can enhance or change the flooring in your home today.

1. Give your hardwood floors a refinishing treatment. For homes that already have hardwood floors installed, a hardwood floor expert can work wonders with sanding and staining techniques to cover water damage, stains and other issues on older wood floors. Once the floors are completely sanded and stained, you want to apply 3 coats of polyurethane to provide a hard durable finish. It’s your choice preference of finish sheen, the most popular is semi gloss, your other choices are also gloss and satin finishes. Today’s technology provides two choices in polyurethane, oil base & water base.

Water-based will not yellow. Therefore the color of the stain remains true. Oil-based will yellow and tint the overall effect of the color. Many prefer the water-based for the lack of annoying fumes at the time of application, low risk of combustion, as well as the shorter drying time. The oil-based product generally reaches full hardness sooner than the water-based. If time is an issue, this may be compelling.

2. Install new carpet. This option is popular because it is easy and carpet comes in so many colors, patterns and levels of quality that you are bound to find something that meets your needs. Stay away from “trendy” colors if you think that you will be selling your home within the next few years, though, as many people want a home that is ready to move in to, without any additional expenses for new carpeting.

3. Investigate your options with ceramic tile. Tile is durable and easy to clean, which makes sense for bathroom and kitchen areas. Ceramic tile is an interesting option that allows you to get a high-end look for an extremely reasonable price. Check your building supply houses and big box stores for deals on high traffic tile; you will be surprised on the great buys available in the .80-.99 cent per square foot price range. There are five grades assigned to floor tile, the grades are in roman numerals, with grade I being the lowest and V being the highest. Grade III tiles are perfect for residential applications in kitchen and entry areas which receive considerable traffic, Grade II can be used where light traffic is expected, like bathroom floors. Grades IV & V are mostly used in commercial applications.

3. Install Pergo or some of the other brands of laminate wood products. These types of flooring look great, and are easy to install on your own. Choose from a variety of colors and styles, and save a bundle on floors that have a great hardwood look for a fraction of the cost.

5. Get creative and use special paint and stencils to create designs on your flooring. This works especially well in a child’s room, a garden room or the kitchen. Paint a “mat” in front of your kitchen sink in a bold color-coordinated pattern to add a touch of whimsy, or go down to the concrete and stain your floors for a modern, industrial look.

6. Get really crafty and use brown kraft paper for a faux-leather look. This rustic take on flooring is easily accomplished in the following way. Using paints made for flooring, crush brown, thick kraft paper and dip in the paint, then stamp on your floors. This method works best when done in darker shades of brown paint, with a satin-finish protective varnish applied afterward.

7. Install one of the new types of vinyl sheet flooring that requires no gluing. This flooring comes in a variety of great looks and patterns, making it one of the easiest choices to transform a room.

Whether you want an artsy look or sophistication, follow the above tips to transform your old looking floors, you’ll be amazed at your results.

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.

Fox Proofing Your Chicken Coop

By Kerry Mundt

No one wants to wake up one morning to discover that a fox has attacked your backyard chickens. As such, it is important to make sure your chicken coop is fox proof. It is absolutely devastating to find your pet chickens after a fox has come through. You’d be surprised how many city people don’t even consider foxes when setting up their chicken coop. There are many reports of foxes in urban areas, so don’t assume that foxes are only for rural areas.

As manufacturers of mobile chicken coops, we’ve had many customers tell us about the brazen foxes in their area. Some come as close as their back porch in the early morning, and that’s in a metropolitan area! Don’t wait until you see a fox in your area, or hear of a fox attack before you safeguard your chickens.

Keeping Foxes Out of a Mobile Chicken Coop

How to best fox proof your chicken coop, largely depends on the style of coop that you have. If you have a mobile chicken coop that has a run attached to a housing section, it’s important to make sure that foxes can’t tunnel underneath the outer edges of your coop. Even if you’ve got hard soil, don’t think that a determined fox won’t try to gain access.

The easiest way to fox proof a mobile coop is to attach a large mesh floor to the bottom of the coop. If it’s attached to the base itself, it will be able to be moved along with your coop when you move your chickens to a fresh area of your backyard. It’s important to make sure the mesh you use is still large enough that your chickens have room to scratch, but small enough to keep foxes out. We’ve found that mesh with 10cm x 15cm rectangles is ideal. If you stood this mesh upright, a fox could actually fit through, but when it’s wired to the base of your coop, a fox will not be able enter the coop due to the angle of their burrowing.

The other option is to create a mesh ‘skirt’ around the edge of your coop. This allows your chickens more room to scratch, as there’s no need to have the mesh under the coop as well, but makes moving your coop a little harder. We’ve tried both methods and the skirt is very cumbersome, but may be the preferred option by some.

Another important consideration is the strength of the mesh that is used on the sides of your coop. Unfortunately, some of the imported coops that I’ve seen on the market are made using very light ‘aviary’ style mesh. We’ve been told of foxes that have chewed through this thin mesh to gain access to the chicken coop. So just make sure that the coop you purchase, or make, has strong enough mesh. I would suggest mesh that is 2.5mm thick. We’ve found that this cannot be damaged by foxes trying to chew through, or children who love chickens and clamber all over the chicken coop!

Keeping Foxes Out of a Fixed Chicken Coop

If you’ve got a chicken coop that stays in a fixed position, the main issue is making sure that the run area is fox proof. Most people with a traditional chicken shed and run erect a permitter of high chicken wire to form the run. This wire should have holes no larger than 80mm in diameter. As this style of run generally has no ‘roof’, it’s important that the walls are high enough to prevent a chicken from flying over as well as to prevent a fox from entering (around 1.8m high is generally adequate).

The other important consideration is that the chicken wire at the bottom of the fence is dug into the ground, not far below the surface to a distance of about 50 or 60cm. As mentioned, foxes will dig to gain access to your chicken coop. When the foxes come across this wire time and time again, they’ll eventually give up trying to access your chicken coop. Another way of achieving this barrier is to but something heavy like wooden or concrete sleeps on top of the mesh at the bottom of your fence.

UN carries out first review of US human rights record

Saturday, March 19, 2011

The United Nations has completed its first ever assessment of the United States human rights record, which began last November. They made 228 recommendations for improvements. On Friday, the U.S. accepted about 174 of these, agreeing to such recommendations as the humane treatment of terror suspects and repudiation of torture, but rejected the recommendation to drop the death penalty.

The Legal Adviser of the Department of State, Harold Koh, listed nine core areas in which the U.S. agreed to make improvements, including civil rights, immigration, and the humane treatment of suspects held at Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Koh said President Obama agreed to push for ratification of conditions under the Geneva Conventions and to add protections for international armed conflict detainees. Koh refused to drop the death penalty as many European countries requested, arguing that it was legal under international law.

Some nations wanted the U.S. to reduce prison overcrowding, prevent racial profiling, and ratify international treaties protecting the rights of women and children. China and Russia wanted Guantanamo to be shut down. Cuba, Iran and Venezuela said the U.S. was ignoring too many recommendations.

The Obama administration joined the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council two years ago, allowing for increased international scrutiny. This is the first time the five-year-old council has reviewed the U.S. record of human rights. Nations are held accountable to make the improvements in the recommendations that they agree to.

In criticism of the U.S., the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s human rights program, Jamil Dakwar, noted that the U.S., unlike 100 other countries, lacks an independent human rights monitoring commission.
