Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Europe’s airline chaos: in depth

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Aviation experts are warning that air traffic across western Europe may continue to be affected by an Icelandic volcano, which has been billowing clouds of ash and spreading it throughout the region.

Experts say that the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, located in Iceland, continues to have “sporadic eruptions”; dark ash clouds have been moving south and east of the area, causing mass flight cancellations all over Europe, spanning from the UK to Russia over fears that the soot may be catastrophic to planes – such as causing engines to fail in-flight or severely reducing the pilot’s visibility.

The ash clouds are drifting between six to nine thousand meters above the ground, and are moving eastwards, over northern France and Austria and towards Russia at about 40 kilometers per hour.

Already, thousands of passengers have been left stranded around the world, unable to travel to and from various points in Europe. The continent’s air-traffic control center predicted 17,000 flights to have been cancelled on Friday alone, and indicated there would be further disruption today. The cancellations are costing airlines about US$200 million daily, the International Air Transport Association reports.

A global association of air traffic control companies commented that ash clouds would probably continue to affect flights for some time. “The knock-on effect of the volcanic ash plume over northern Europe is likely to disrupt European airspace for several days,” the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization said in a statement. “Traffic will have to be reorganized and rerouted and flights preplanned, all on a dynamic and quite unpredictable basis.”

“The skies are totally empty over northern Europe,” said Eurocontrol‘s deputy head, Bryan Flynn. The agency said more than half of Europe’s average 28,000 daily flights were cancelled yesterday, twice as many as were called off on Thursday.

In a special report, Wikinews takes a look at how different countries have been affected by this event.

All of Germany’s sixteen airports with international flights have been shut down today, including the busy Frankfurt airport. A spokesman for carrier Lufthansa says all of its flights were cancelled until no sooner than 20.00 local time (18.00 UTC). He said that there were no planes from the airline in the air anywhere on the globe. “There has never been anything like this,” he said.

Icelandic airports are open, despite being in such close proximity to the billowing volcano, as the winds are blowing ash clouds away from the vicinity.

The Icelandic Met Office’s Matthew Roberts, told the BBC that the volcano hasn’t been expending as much ash, and that the eruption was slowing down.

Icelandic officials are urging local residents with respiratory problems to refrain from going outdoors, and encourages the use of protective goggles and masks to those who do go out.

Most disruption in the country has actually been to ground, not air, traffic. Local police chief Kjartan Thorkelsson commented: “We had to close roads because of the ash yesterday [Thursday], even though it was not very thick.” He added that the ash “is particularly dangerous for animals, since it can go into water and the grass they eat, [but] [i]t is not as dangerous to humans”.

Experts suggest that occasional disruptions are possible throughout the next half year, should Eyjafjallajokull continue to erupt. Another concern is that it may trigger an eruption from the larger Katla volcano nearby, which has occurred every time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted for the past few centuries.

Even countries as far away as Japan were affected by the ash clouds. A correspondent for the BBC, in Tokyo‘s Narita Airport, says that many travellers en route to Europe had to spend the night in the departure lounge because their flights were cancelled: “Airlines have handed out sleeping bags and blankets but there have been complaints there aren’t enough to go round. The longer the airports are closed the longer the backlog of passengers builds up,” he reports.

Polish authorities have suggested that they will delay the funeral of deceased president Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in Russia last week. Many world leaders planning to attend the funeral might be prevented from doing so due to the ash clouds. Poland was one of twelve to close down most or all of its airspace.

The president’s family, however, has insisted the ceremony, to be held in Krakow, proceed as planned.

The UK’s National Air Traffic Service (NATS), says that its restrictions on airspace in the country would remain in effect until no sooner than 13.00 UTC today. Travel bans for Northern Ireland and Scotland have been lifted, although NATS stressed that this does not necessarily mean flights to and from the area will actually resume.

Ryanair, meanwhile, cancelled all its northern Europe flights until 13.00 on Monday. British Airways called off all of its flights from London airports.

UK ferry operators saw a jump in bookings as stranded air travellers sought other ways to cross the English Channel.

A spokesman with the British Civil Aviation Authority commented that, [i]n terms of closure of airspace, this is worse than after 9/11. The disruption is probably larger than anything we’ve seen.”

A correspondent for Al Jazeera reporting from London Heathrow airport described stranded travellers’ attitude as being “increasingly frustrated”. He remarked: “Some sources I’ve been speaking to have been indicating that this will probably be extended further. There may be intermittent disruptions to flights for months to come.”

The Icelandic volcano may cause the US to experience volcanic sunsets. Vulcanologist Jay Miller claims, “Once it stops erupting it will take a few days to settle out. As long as there’s ash in the atmosphere or any pollutant for that matter, you’ll see these alterations in the color we see in the sky.”

Brian Toon of University of Colorado, Boulder, says: “It’s unlikely any of this volcanic ash will get as far as the United States. But it is possible. It’s just rare. It’s likely the stuff will get washed out before it ever gets here.”

American Airlines, in the meantime, announced it had cancelled 56 of its flights to and from Europe today, and the same amount yesterday; countries to which flights were not called off were Italy and Spain. US-based airlines make 337 flights between Europe and the US daily; of those, 280 were cancelled yesterday, the Air Transport Association of America says.

The Icelandic volcano has not caused many problems in Chile. SCL reported to El Mercurio that just a flight has been cancelled. The flight was operated by Air France, that may had went at the 16:00 local time to France. “We don’t know if this suspended flight will go, yet,” SCL reported, and warranted that “Air France is not going today.” SCL also stated that has not been cancelled any other flights, but that could change as the time goes by.

Arizona bans abortion for genetic abnormalities

Friday, April 30, 2021

On Tuesday, the Governor of the US state of Arizona Doug Ducey signed into law a bill banning abortion if sought solely because of a foetus’ genetic abnormality.

Senate Bill 1457, which stalled twice for criticism by opponents of abortion, passed both chambers of the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature last week in a party-line vote, amended twice along the way to alleviate concerns by two hesitant Republicans.

The bill makes it a Class 6 felony, the least severe, to seek or perform an abortion “because of a genetic abnormality of the child”, defined as “the presence or presumed presence of an abnormal gene expression in an unborn child”, but not a “severe fetal abnormality” considered “incompatible with life.” Intimidating someone to get an abortion and soliciting or accepting monies to finance an abortion for this purpose has been made a Class 3 felony.

The bill also allows the unborn child’s father or, in case the mother is under 18, a maternal grandparent to sue, as well as including the applicability of state law to “an unborn child at every stage of development”, which Senator Kirsten Engel and Representative Melody Hernandez wrote in a submitted minority report “would open up the potential for prosecutors to charge persons including the pregnant individual whose conduct results in a woman having a miscarriage with murder, manslaughter or child endangerment.”

Other provisions of the bill includes a prohibition on the distribution “via courier, delivery or mail service” of abortion-inducing drugs, a ban on any public educational institution from performing or aiding non-life saving abortion, a ban on the use of public or tax monies paid by the state or students for university research involving foetal remains or somatic cell nuclear transfer, or any state money towards organisations providing abortion care, and requiring all foetal remains to be buried or cremated.

KYMA-DT reported Ducey is an anti-abortion rights governor who ran on the Republican ballot and has never vetoed anti-abortion legislation. In a statement, Duckey said, “[t]here’s immeasurable value in every single life — regardless of genetic makeup […] We will continue to prioritize protecting life in our preborn children, and this legislation goes a long way in protecting real human lives.” The news release, originally published on his website also read, “[w]ith this legislation, Arizona remains among the top pro-life states in the nation.”

Senator Nancy Barto said, according to the release “[w]e need to protect our most vulnerable, especially those with treatable genetic conditions […] They are loved, integral members of our community that make Arizona whole”. Cathi Herrod, president of Center for Arizona Policy said in her own news release, according to the Associated Press “[t]oday, Arizonans win.”

Representative Diego Espinoza wrote in a tweet, “I’m disappointed to see Arizona moving in this direction, ignoring the needs and desires of doctors, women, and families for an extreme political agenda.” Representative and House Democratic Leader Reginald Bolding wrote in a statement “it’s disturbing and wrong that the legislature is not focusing on policies to help [women], and instead is stripping away the fundamental freedom to choose if, when, and how to start or grow a family.”

In a letter shared to a Facebook post, the union United Campus Workers at Arizona State University urged last Saturday to the Arizona Board of Regents, university president Michael M. Crow and University of Arizona president Robert D. Robbins to “immediately speak out against SB 1457”, calling it “a blatant attack on reproductive freedom”.

Does My Ex Girlfriend Still Have Feelings For Me? 5 Signs}

Submitted by: Robbie T. James

Regardless of who was at fault, who initiated it and who hurt whom in the process, going through a breakup is hard no matter what. During this time of transition, it is nearly impossible to tease apart the complex set of feelings that one goes through. The feelings you go through can be a mixture of anger, sadness, love and longing. What a cocktail!

If you have gone through a breakup with someone you really cared about, you may be asking yourself, “Does my ex-girlfriend still have feelings for me?” Truth is, just the mere fact that you are asking that question means that there remain feelings of love and respect for her on your part. And, it is a real possibility that she is still harboring strong feelings for you.

Given the painful and tumultuous nature of breakups, it can be difficult to know for sure what the other person is really feeling. When things go badly during a breakup (and they usually do), pride and emotions are running so high that both people have trouble admitting to themselves or each other whether they still care for the other person. It’s hard to be honest about your feelings when you are feeling the anger, indignation, resentment and sadness that accompany breakups.

Here are 5 signs that your ex-girlfriend still may have feelings for you:

Sign #1: She occasionally texts, Facebook posts or Tweets about you or to you:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0QVLDax384[/youtube]

When we have feelings for someone, they are on our minds a lot. Even if only for sub-conscious reasons linked to her strong feelings for you, if your girlfriend is mentioning your name in Tweets and texts, it means you are on her mind. She likely still thinks and cares about you.

Sign #2: She calls you to see how you are doing:

Even if your ex has called you just a handful of times since your breakup, phone calls mean she is still thinking of you. A “bonus” sign that she still cares: when she calls you she asks if you have new girlfriend or are interested in anyone else.

Sign #3: When you see each other, she feels uncomfortable and nervous:

Have you bumped into your ex-girlfriend or maybe met her for a quick cup of coffee since your breakup? Think about how she acted. Was she fidgety and nervous? Did she avoid eye contact? These body language signs indicate that she still has lingering emotions for you.

Sign #4: She has not moved on with another guy:

Is your ex still single, or has she moved on with a new relationship? If it has been more than three months since your breakup and she is still flying solo or not at least dating casually, she may still have feelings for you.

Sign #5: You hear she still visits the same spots you used to visit as a couple:

Have you gotten word that your ex-girlfriend still visits those same places the two of you used to visit, such as a certain restaurant, bar, park, or store? She may be returning there to remind herself of the times you had together.

Given that you are still having feelings for your ex-girlfriend and suspect she may be the same way, your relationship was no doubt a very special one. If you believe your ex has shown one or more of these signs since your breakup, you owe it to both of you to find a way back into her arms again.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Oil Sector The Pros And Cons

Submitted by: Christian Garrington

Despite one of the worst global financial meltdowns in the last 70 years, the oil and gas industry seems to have emerged out of the recession relatively untouched. Rather than cut jobs and rein in on expenditure and exploration, the industry has adopted a policy of wait and see by freezing wages and basically keeping the industry on tickover. The policy seems to have paid off as the world finally starts to see light at the end of the economic tunnel, the oil and gas industry is poised to take full advantage of the upturn in demand for supplies as industry presses the on button.

A wealth of opportunities

For oil and gas jobs, this presents a wealth of new opportunities. The world s dependency on oil and gas products is growing, not receding. Although alternative fuels are very much on the agenda for everyone, the exploration of the planet s natural resources continues unabated. This means new methods of extraction, deep drilling and oil sands, which in turn equates to a plethora of new opportunities for those looking for a career move into a boom industry.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2ms95HX0l4[/youtube]

On the face of it there are plenty of pros in making the move into an oil and gas job. The most obvious one for anyone looking for a long-term career is the pay. Oil and gas jobs have a reputation for paying well, even at entry-level positions. Hard work is well rewarded, with basic drilling jobs paying up to US$50,000 a year. The more experience a candidate has, the greater the rewards and graduates going into oil and gas jobs can expect to be paid much more than in other graduate positions in alternative industries.

Career advancement is also high on the list, with hard work again being rewarded by rapid promotion. Candidates who show initiative, good team working skills and determination can quickly rise up through the ranks to more responsible positions. Roustabouts, the most common entry-level position, can become drillers in a matter of a few years, making oil and gas jobs ideal for those who want a career but may not have the formal qualifications to go into more academically demanding jobs.

For those who want to see a bit of the world, oil and gas jobs present the ideal opportunity to travel abroad, as the industry is an international one. From the offshore platforms of the North Sea to new fields opening up in Australia, there is a wealth of chances to travel and be part of a global industry, as well as earning a good salary.

Still a dangerous occupation

So what are the cons to oil and gas jobs? Recent events in the Gulf of Mexico have emphasised that, although one of the most high-tech of industries, oil exploration is still a dangerous occupation. Safety is a primary concern within the oil and gas industry, but if you are thinking about going into the sector then you must be aware that, like most heavy industry, it does carry its own particular risks.

Rig work in particular is hard, gruelling and very dirty work. For those who like to wear a collar and tie to work, careers in oil and gas are still available, but perhaps within a different context such as research and development, personnel and what are termed as upstream jobs. The nature of the work means that you may spend long periods away from home, so for candidates with families, the separation can be hard to deal with initially. However, rig teams build close ties and many consider their rig colleagues to be a second family , forming bonds that can last a lifetime.

If you re prepared to work hard, use your initiative and don t mind getting your hands a little dirty, oil and gas jobs can offer a chance to develop a career, rather than just another nine to five job.
