Tim FordA Blessing in Disguise for Caterers and Party Organizers There are occasions in life when one cannot provide food to guests, family and friends using your everyday flatware or serve on inexpensive paper plates and cups. Many gatherings are formal and solemn in naturean engagement party, wedding, barmitsva or an anniversary, even a baby shower or birthday. Corporate events are often formal events, except for outdoor company picnics. Caterers, party planners and family hosts have been compelled to use formal dinnerware and cutlery during these events owing to their traditional nature. In the past, there were very few choices available. Chipping and breakage of expensive china was commonplace not to mention hours of hand washing and drying. But theres a new reason to celebrate. As a member of the food service industry or just someone who likes to throw tastefully appointed parties at home, you now have a variety of tasteful options in elegant disposable dinnerware.Exploring the Elegance The line of dinnerware we have chosen to tell you about is designed to stand up to the highest quality of china and cutlery not merely in terms of look and feel but also in terms of visual appeal, overall appearance and lasting impressions. They are often made of biodegradable materials and thus remain eco friendly from start to finish. They are sturdy and are meant to hold foods firmly. They tend to blend in with the upscale ambience so naturally that there have been many cases where in spite of their disposable attributes, they have been reclaimed, washed and used again.Choice Galore A number of manufacturers such as WNA Comet, and others have introduced chic-looking dinnerware including dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, cups, glasses, coffee mugs and trays. They are 100% compatible with both hot and cold foods and are, in most cases, microwave safe. Some manufacturers have even introduced matched dinnerware sets that are attractively color coordinated and shaped to complement one another. They not only accent your food presentation but also emerge as the main topic of dinner table discussion. Were it not for their disposable nature, they could easily fit in seamlessly in the category of designer dinnerware. From a budgetary standpoint, most of these products cost less than $1 each and many of them are less than 50 cents each wholesale thus bringing them within the purchasing power of many caterers and commercial food service operators. SBC teams with Scientific-Atlanta for cable TV rollout in 13 US states

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Regional U.S. telephone giant SBC Communications is one step closer to offering cable television to the 18 million households in its 13 state coverage area. The company announced a $195 million contract with Scientific-Atlanta Thursday to provide a video operations center and regional hubs for the new service. Under the brand name, U-verse, the SBC’s television rollout is set to launch in 2006 after field trials begin later this year.

The company is seeking the so-called “triple play,” where a telecommunications company offers voice, data and video in one bundled package. Local telephone companies like SBC have been losing business to cable TV companies, which have added telephone and Internet services in recent years.

In a slew of recent deals, SBC is looking to stop that trend. Within the past six months it has signed alliances with various technology firms to build out a fiber network to the home strategy. For instance, SBC has a $1.7 billion deal with Alcatel to build out its fiber optic network and a 10-year, $400 million, pact with Microsoft to license its IPTV technology to allow multi-channel television to stream over its Internet backbone.

In most of the U.S. only cable TV companies like Comcast have been able to offer the “triple play” of voice, video and data services. But traditional phone companies like SBC and Verizon have been upgrading their copper wire telephone networks to fiber optic. SBC says it plans to spend billions of dollars to overhaul its telecommunications network, saying the aging and brittle copper wires which were originally laid in the early 1900s do not have enough bandwidth to allow television capability.

Contaminated pet food causes massive recall

Monday, March 19, 2007

At least 10 pets, 9 cats and 1 dog have died as a result of eating contaminated pet food, says the United States Food and Drug Administration, or FDA. The contamination caused cats and dogs to both go into kidney failure.

At least 51 brands of cat food and 40 brands of dog food have been recalled. The manufacturer of the food is Menu Foods, which is based in Mississauga, Ontario in Canada. The brands include: Iams, Nutro, and Eukanuba pet foods. Nestle, Purina PetCare Co., Procter & Gamble and Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. are voluntarily recalling their pet foods as a precaution. The FDA says that only wet food has been reported to have caused the deaths. The food was sold between December of 2006 and March 3 of 2007. The recall includes pouches and cans of wet food that total over 60 million.

“We are still trying to find out what the true picture is out there of animals. We’re talking about 1 percent of the pet food [supply] and it’s really just impossible to extrapolate at this point,” reported the FDA’s head veterinarian, Stephen F. Sundlof.

The manufacturer is currently performing tests to determine what might have caused the contamination, but so far, the source has not been identified.

“We’re testing and testing, but we can’t identify the problem in the product,” said Sarah Tuite, a spokeswoman for Menu Foods.

Anywhere from 40 to 50 cats and dogs were fed the contaminated food during testing by Menu Foods, and at least seven of those animals died. The species or how many cats or dogs died during testing is not known.

The FDA says that the possible cause of the contamination could be from heavy metals, lead or fungi inside wheat gluten which is used in pet foods as a “filler.”

A complete list of the products recalled can be found here: Menu Foods Recall List. Pet owners are urged to stop using any and all food on that list that may still be in their home. Owners are also asked to seek immediate veterinarian attention if the pets are suspected of eating the food.

The recall could cost over 30 million USD.

Solar powered plane completes first leg of transcontinental trip

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Solar Impulse, the world’s most advanced solar powered plane has just completed the first of the five legs of its trans-continental journey, flying fuel-free from San Francisco to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, in just over 18 hours.

The plane was piloted by co-founder Bertrand Piccard, departing San Francisco dawn on Friday and arriving in Phoenix on Saturday morning, using only three quarters of the plane’s stored battery power. “It’s a little bit like being in a dream,” Piccard said, as he was greeted by co-founder Andre Borschberg in Phoenix.

Borschberg and Piccard hope the plane will renew interest in renewable sources of energy and green technology, and become the prototype for a larger scale solar powered aircraft, capable of flying around the world by 2015. “If an airplane can fly day or night with no fuel, just on the sun’s power, of course it means that everybody in daily life can use this technology for his house, for heating and cooling systems, for lighting, for cars, for trucks. There’s so much we can do now to have a cleaner future,” Piccard said.

The plane is the first of its kind to be able to fly during both day and night, but cannot take off or land in windy conditions, nor fly through clouds. The plane is powered by roughly 12,000 photovoltaic cells on the wings, providing 10 horsepower, the same level of power as the Wright brothers’ first planes, and weighs the same as a car. “One hundred years ago, the planes had to fly in good weather and there was only one person on board,” Piccard said. “Now we have completely new technology, we fly with no fuel at all. But, of course, we need to fly in good weather and we carry only one pilot on board.

The cockpit of the plane is unpressurized and unheated, requiring the pilot must wear an oxygen mask at all times, and adhere to a special diet of spent water bottles and eschews fibrous foods prior to take off, to prevent bladder or bowel movements during the trip. Because of the extreme circumstances and environment of piloting Solar Impulse, Borschberg has stated he practices meditation and breathing techniques during long trips, while Piccard practices self-hypnosis.

Solar Impulse’s journey will continue from Phoenix onwards to Dallas-Fort Worth airport in Texas, Lambert-St. Louis airport, Dulles airport in the Washington area and New York’s John F. Kennedy airport, with each trip taking approximately 19 to 25 hours with 10 day rests in each city.

How To Make A Good Offer When Buying Property

By P Green

When you’re buying property you’re making what will probably be the biggest single purchase in your life.

That’s pretty scary, and it’s why you need to thoroughly do your research before choosing your house.

When you have found the right place, be prepared to do a little haggling – it could save you thousands of pounds.

Really, no-one should just pay the offer price of a house for sale, especially in the cooling market we seem to have at the moment. Indeed, many sellers deliberately put a few thousand on the asking price to give them some room for movement.

But if you’re not the kind of person who enjoys haggling, then that’s not going to change just because you are buying property!

Here’s a handy guide that will help you find ways to knock the asking price down and secure yourself a bargain home:

Do lots of research

This is key to saving money and getting the right deal all the way through the process of buying property. The more work you put in behind the scenes securing valuable information, the more power you will have to negotiate. If the average house price in the area is a little lower than the home you want to buy, find out why. If there’s no immediately obvious reason, that information becomes a lever to get a price drop. Just remember to be thorough and realistic with your research.

Understand the seller

If you can work out why they are selling their home, it will put you in a much stronger position to buy it at the right price. For example, do they need to leave the area quickly because of new jobs elsewhere? In which case they will be more open to any steps you can take to speed the sale up (making them more receptive to an offer). Whereas if they have fallen in love with a new expensive property nearby, then money may be more of an issue, making them less likely to want to haggle. Don’t be afraid to ask the seller or agent why they are moving.

Make your position clear

Your value as a buyer will depend on the situation you are in and what the seller wants. If you have a mortgage agreed in principle; are a cash or first time buyer; or have no chain, you are generally a more attractive purchaser. This will work in your favour if there are multiple offers for the property. Ensure the seller’s estate agent understands the exact details of your situation. Remember, it’s in their best interests as well that the person buying property from their client can complete quickly.

Check the market

If the market is slowing, as it seems to be at the moment, then the power shifts to you as a buyer. When houses are slower to sell, it reduces the number of options to the seller, who ultimately just wants to sell up and move on to the next house. In some areas this doesn’t apply – for example first time buyers often find there is such a shortage of affordable housing for them, they are forced to grab the first half decent property they can find. This puts the power back with the seller. Do some research on the situation in your area and use the information accordingly.

Leverage the condition of the house

Smart buyers will carefully examine what’s included in the sale and what work needs doing to the property to bring it up to top standard. When you are viewing the house, look carefully for any property maintenance that needs to be done. Even a bit of decorating will cost you time and money, and can be reflected in the price. It’s also worth indicating that you will have a survey carried out if your offer is accepted. This can sometimes prompt sellers to disclose potential problems the survey may discover, in the hope they won’t scupper the sale down the line.

Show you have done your homework

Finally, don’t be afraid to demonstrate to the seller and their agent that you have done your research, you understand the market and the property for sale, and you are experienced at buying property. It makes them more likely to just want to do a deal with you and get the transaction moving.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.
