Tips To Protect Yourself From Credit Card Fraud

Tips to protect yourself from credit card fraud

Kedy J

It seems people need to protect themselves from everything nowadays. You ve heard the terms before: credit card fraud, identity theft, credit score. But, how do thieves obtain your information to start, and is there anything you can do to stop the theft, or protect yourself from it? Follow the steps below to be proactive when it comes to protecting yourself from credit card fraud.

What is Credit Card Fraud

Credit card fraud affects millions of people every year, and there are hundreds of ways thieves can steal your credit card information and use it against you. Credit card fraud occurs most frequently when either someone steals your credit card, or the information contained on it to purchase items, or steal money. Americans are heavy credit card users. This allows credit card thieves to have an unlimited supply of data to steal. Even though hundreds of millions of dollars are stolen every month, unlike identity theft, credit card fraud is easier to handle when detected early. Companies and credit laws have given consumers a sense of protection, as long as the consumer is diligent and is looking for strange usage on their credit cards.

4 Ways Thieves Steal Your Data

There are many ways thieves can steal your credit, but here are five prevalent credit card fraud techniques to be mindful of when you are shopping, or moving around:

 • Switcheroo. This one is a little more clever than most. 2-3 people are generally involved. What happens is one person stands in line while the other two roam the store. As soon as the person in line is at the cash register, one of the two who are shopping runs up and starts yelling they need help. When everyone is distracted, the person in line switches out the store credit card scanner, with one of their own. For the next couple weeks the store employees are unwittingly scanning consumers\’ credit card data.
 • Skimmer. A thief attaches a skimmer over a credit card reader which uses a Bluetooth to transfer credit card information to a laptop nearby.
 • Malware. A thief puts a malware program onto a popular site with low security. When you go to the site you unwittingly download the software which infects your computer. Every time you go back to that site your information is stolen
 • The waitress at the restaurant scans your credit card through the store s scanner. But, when no one is looking, they quickly pull out a small device from their pocket, and scan your card again. This time your information is stored for future use.Protect YourselfYou know these things happen, but maybe you don t know what to do when it does. While no tips can ever guarantee you will not get your credit stolen, there are steps you can take to minimize the chances of losing your data.
 • Stop fraud before it happens. Pay attention to your bank and credit card accounts. If you don t think you made a purchase, then contact your financial institution to report it.
 • Watch out for skimming. Skimming occurs for only a brief second, and when you are not paying attention. You have a couple options. One is to always use cash, but let s face it, that probably isn t realistic. The other option is to never let your credit card leaves your sight.
 • Keep your private information private. Protect your computer with anti-spyware and firewalls. Pay attention to sites that are known to have had malware such as illegal music and video downloads.
 • Ignore Phishing. These emails are hard to miss. You may have won a million dollars, or a Nigerian king needs your help and will pay handsomely for it. They are so corny they are laughable. Stay away from them.
 • Connect safely. Avoid public Wi-Fi when you have personal information on the computer. Public Wi-Fi gives thieves open and often unprotected access to your computer.
 • Report. Report. Report. It can t be said enough. If you suspect suspicious activity report it to your financial institution so you can start fighting fraud before it really affects you.

With these tips you can stay proactive and stop credit card thieves before they hurt you and your bank account.

Australia: Victorian government to trial driverless vehicles on public roads

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Yesterday, the state government of Victoria, Australia announced their decision to trial self-driving vehicles on two of the state’s major connecting motorways, the CityLink and Tullamarine Freeway. The trial is to use autonomous vehicles from automobile companies including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The two-year trial is to have three phases.

The cars are to drive alongside commuters, but in public testing a driver is always to be present, as Victorian law requires drivers always keep a hand on the steering wheel. However, in occasional closures of the Burnley Tunnel, with no other drivers to endanger, the cars are to be tested with nobody in the vehicle.

Lane assist, cruise control, and recognition of traffic signs are in the trial’s first phase, expected to complete before the end of the year. This includes monitoring how the driver-less cars respond to road conditions, including lane markings and electronic speed signs.

“Victoria is at the forefront of automated vehicle technology — we’re investing in this trial to explore ways that this technology can be used to reduce crashes and keep people safe on our roads”, said Luke Donnellan, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety. He noted, “Ninety per cent of the fault of accidents is human error […] so we know that if we can take out human error we will have less accidents”.

Tim Hansen, Victoria Police’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that police had founded a project team to investigate how self-driving vehicles would change policing on roads. “Can we intercept vehicles more safely to avoid pursuits and ramming?”, he asked.

The trial is a partnership between the state government, Victoria’s road management authority VicRoads, owner of the CityLink toll road Transurban, and insurance company RACV.

How To Overcome Speech Problem With Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are now being much preferred by people who desire an awesome smile without making people informed that they are undergoing some dental treatment. Invisalign are spotlessly transparent and hence anybody can rarely detect that you have put them on your teeth. Nevertheless it is a stranger object to your mouth. And therefore in any case when you wear them at the very first moment, you may come across some problem in the way you speak. Here there is a difference regarding the amount of disturbance from person to person. Some particular individuals may find it quite complicated and may go through it for a prolonged period, while certain others may overcome it fast and start talking normally merely within just some days or even hours. Observations during the studies have made it clear that in ninety three percent of Invisalign users, complexity in speech restores to usual swiftly. However when you may face it for the first time you may get worried and may need to resolve it within a short period.

It is not exclusively with Invisalign but with any sort of dental tool that you will experience problem in speaking manner. On the contrary, with Invisalign you will undergo it for less severity, because Invisalign is created from very clear plastic. But, as, it is an unknown substance to your oral cavity, with whatever thickness it gives to your teeth and especially to the spot of hard palate, speech complications are generated essentially, at least to a small degree. A small levelof lisp or spur is observed when you put on your Invisalign on the first occasion, especially when you attempt to pronounce letters like ch, s, j, th, etc since while uttering these sorts of alphabets your tongue comes in contact with your hard palate just on the rear side of the front teeth.

The factual worry for Invisalign wearers is for how long they need to experience the speech difficulty. However they must not be frightened, because as claimed by studies it has been proved that around half of the patients get back to their own speech fast.

If you make an effort to get rid of the speech disturbance, you can surely succeed. And for that you must constantly make a practice of speaking. Here some real efforts is needed on your part. You can try tricks for example reading a book audibly or talking consistently to a friend who is familiar with your disturbance. You must practice pronouncing particularly those alphabets which you find tough. Researches have revealed that speech complication can be overcome as fast as only a few hours. For some individuals it can take a few days.

Sometimes it can also happen that you may are under impression that you have complexity in speaking although you may have obtained comfort from it. This is just your excessive consciousness. In this circumstance, just one activity can be of use and it is asking a close person whom you thoroughly trust to confirm whether all your intonations are right. If that person ensures that there is no flaw you should trust it and stop getting tense.

Also one more worry is regarding speaking difficulty at the time of putting on the next set of Invisalign aligners. However as each Invisalign is approximately equal to its precursor the disturbance doesnt take place. Therefore you can notice that speech problem with Invisalign doesnt go on necessarily and if it goes on it remains for a very short period hence you can be undisturbed.

Scientists report chemotherapy cocktail may cause adult women to grow new egg cells

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Chemotherapy is usually associated with a collection of side effects ranging from digestive problems to hair loss, but a study published this week in Human Reproduction demonstrated that female cancer patients may find they have something in common with much younger women in one specific area — their ovaries.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh examined donated ovarian tissue from fourteen female cancer patients, most of whom had Hodgkin lymphoma, and compared it to tissue from healthy women. They found the samples from women who had been treated with a specific chemotherapeutic regimen known as ABVD not only contained greater numbers of dormant ova — egg cells — than those from women treated with harsher regimens but also more than samples from healthy women. ABVD is named for combining several drugs known as adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine.

These reproductive cells were not merely more plentiful in ABVD patients. They also appeared immature, “new” in the words of lead researcher Evelyn Telfer. This challenges the conventional belief that girls are born with all the ova they will ever have and the numbers can only go down as the cells are either used up by the reproductive cycle or succumb to damage or natural aging. However, further research is needed to confirm this. The study covered relatively few patients by scientific standards, and David Albertini of the Center for Human Reproduction in New York has suggested the cells may not actually be freshly grown. Instead, they may have always been there and were merely rendered more detectable by ABVD treatment.

The ability to grow new egg cells may have significant implications for women in Western societies, many of whom postpone childbearing to establish careers, sometimes into their late thirties or forties. However, Telfer warns against making use of these findings too soon: “There’s so much we don’t know about the ovary. We have to be very cautious about jumping to clinical applications.”

The experiments had been discussed earlier this year at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

First Active offer 100% mortgages in Ireland

Thursday, July 14, 2005

First Active has become the first financial institution to offer 100% mortgages in the Republic of Ireland. The bank previously offered 100% financing to professionals in finance and medicine, but is now to offer this product to anyone who can afford to meet the repayments.

The development is a huge boost for first time home buyers who have been struggling to get on the Irish property market in recent years due to the rapid increase in house prices. A typical first time buyer in Dublin with 92% financing would normally have to put down a deposit of €20,000-€30,000 in cash, but now have the option to produce no deposit.

First Active has said that 100% mortgages will be available across its entire range of mortgage products.

Note however that this is not necessarily an entirely positive development.

The United States and most of Europe have experienced a housing price bubble in recent years. A bubble occurs when buyers purchase a property not because its price is appropriate for its actual value but because they expect the price to significantly rise in the short term permitting resale with a profit.

In other words, the prices people pay for properties becomes divorced from the real value of the property; the purchase is speculative and depends purely upon the expectation that people will continue to buy properties in this way (e.g. without proper consideration of their real value).

The terrible weakness in this is that when the market corrects itself and prices fall to a level where properties are being priced at their actual realistic value, anyone holding a property loses a great deal of money, since the price they paid does not reflect the actual realistic value of the property.

This kind of shock to the housing market is extremely undesirable. Significant write downs in the value of property often significantly depress the economy as a whole.

Less than 100% mortgages force buyers to invest a significant amount of money in the act of purchasing their house, which tends to discourage purely speculative purchasing, thus helping to mediate house price bubbles.

With 100% financing, anyone who can meet repayments can speculatively purchase a property. This naturally encourages pricing bubbles.

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer makes 2005 Budget speech

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Right Honourable Gordon Brown PC MP, in a speech to the British House of Commons today presented his ninth Budget, what is very likely to be his last Budget before the next UK General Election. This opened the parliamentary debate on the 2005 Finance Bill, and was followed by responses from the opposition parties.

In a 48 minute long speech, the Chancellor presented a Budget of “tax cuts that are reasonable, spending that is affordable, and [economic] stability that is paramount”, that was “the prudent course for Britain”. There were few surprises that had not already been indicated in his 2004 pre-Budget report. The increase in the threshold on stamp duty was greater than that forecast by commentators, as was the amount of the Council Tax rebate to households with pensioners.
